At around 5:07 a.m., deputies responded to an accident near mile marker 2 on the eastbound lane of I-129. The initial collision involved a 2008 Toyota Camry, reported as stolen from South Sioux City, Nebraska. The Camry crashed into the center median barricade, prompting two good Samaritans to stop and offer assistance to the driver

In a tragic turn of events, a second passenger vehicle, also heading eastbound, struck the Camry, the Samaritans, and then a third vehicle parked on the shoulder. One of the Samaritans, a 66-year-old resident of South Sioux City, was fatally injured. The other Samaritan, along with the driver of the second vehicle, were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Compounding the tragedy, the driver of the stolen Camry fled the scene on foot before the arrival of law enforcement and remains at large. Currently, there is no detailed description of this individual.

Additionally, a separate collision occurred in the westbound lanes of I-129 shortly after, which fortunately did not result in serious injuries.

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the South Sioux City Police Department, is investigating the incidents. They are requesting anyone with information about the accident or the fleeing suspect to contact them immediately.
