A shelter has been set up at the middle school in South Sioux City as of 2:30 pm on Wednesday for any resident displaced by the explosion of the grain elevator. If you are a resident who has been evacuated you're asked to go to the Southwest corner of the building door 49. The shelter set up by the Red Cross will be staffed overnight.

Multiple fire departments in and around South Sioux City responded to 25th and Willow streets about 1:00 pm on Tuesday after a grain elevator exploded leaving 2 people injured, 1 serious.
South Sioux City, Homer, Dakota City, Winnebago, Sergeant Bluff Fire and EMS along with South Sioux City Police, Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and Dakota County Emergency Management responded to the area and immediately began evacuating nearby businesses and residences keeping people away from the area as the stability of the building was unknown and with gas still flowing and regular smaller explosions still happening the area was deemed not safe.
Mid American Energy and Nebraska Public Power district responded to shut off electricity and gas to the structure. A street had to be dug up in order to shut off the gas as of 4:00 pm the fire was still coming from the structure because of the flowing gas.
Three people were present when the explosion happened. Two were injured, one serious but non-life-threatening and was transported to mercy medical center and then to a burn center in Lincoln. The other checked out by EMS personnel but was not transported. The third was not injured.
The area will remain blocked off an area evacuated until the gas is shut off and the structure is deemed safe. The structure which appears to be over 100 foot tall big holes of missing block on all sides as well as smaller structure completely destroyed.
