South Sioux City, NE - On May 25th, 2024, an officer-involved shooting occurred during an investigation involving a stolen Budget Rental truck from Kansas. The incident took place in the 800 block of Dakota Avenue.
The South Sioux City Police Department, in collaboration with the Nebraska State Patrol, is currently investigating the events that led to the shooting. Brian Leroy Church, initially a passenger in the stolen truck, moved to the driver's seat and drove towards an officer, prompting the officer to discharge their weapon. The truck then struck a parked vehicle before fleeing the scene recklessly.
A high-speed pursuit ensued, crossing into Iowa and South Dakota. Law enforcement successfully deployed stop sticks, bringing the chase to an end near Elk Point, SD. Brian was apprehended and found to have sustained gunshot wounds from the initial confrontation. Medical aid was administered by law enforcement until the arrival of Elk Point Fire Department personnel, who transported Brian to a nearby hospital. His injuries were non-life-threatening, and he was later discharged.
Brian Leroy Church was arrested for an outstanding felony theft warrant from Kansas. Additional charges in connection with the incident include felony theft by receiving stolen property valued at $5000 or more, felony operation of a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, and felony attempted assault on an officer using a motor vehicle.
Gwenn M. Homan, who was initially driving the stolen truck, was also arrested on charges of theft by receiving stolen property valued at $5000 or more.
In accordance with protocol for officer-involved shootings, the South Sioux City Police Department will conduct a comprehensive multi-level review of the incident. The Nebraska State Patrol will lead an independent investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.
