Two arrested after shots fired in Sioux City and Pursuit in South Dakota

About 2:30 pm Sunday, June 27th Sioux City Police responded to a report of shots being fired in the 1800 block of Grandview Boulevard. Officers found a van that had been shot multiple times.

Officers learned that 41-year-old Anwar Maxwell an estranged common-law husband to the van's owner had shot at the van after she refused to give him the keys. Maxwell fled the scene in a white unplated Ford Explorer along with 30-year-old Tiana J. Maxey, both of Milwaukee Wisconsin.

A short time later an officer with North Sioux City Police department stopped the vehicle on Interstate 29 in South Dakota as it matched the description of the suspect vehicle from Sioux City. While identifying and before being able to detain the subjects in the vehicle, the vehicle fled from the traffic stop. A pursuit that included South Dakota State Patrol, Union County Sheriff's Office, North Sioux City Police Department, and Elk Point Police Department started a short time later before the vehicle was disabled using stop sticks about Mile Marker 23 just North of Elk Point in South Dakota on Interstate 29.

The vehicle came to a stop and the driver Tiana J. Maxey was detained. Anwar Maxwell then took off in the vehicle, the vehicle was disabled further and he was taken into custody a couple miles later. Maxey was transported to Union County Jail charged with traffic offenses. Maxwell was transported to Mercy Medical Center and then Woodbury County jail charged with felon in possession of a firearm, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, drug tax stamp violation, reckless use of a firearm, criminal mischief and an outstanding warrant from Wisconsin.

No injuries were reported in the shots fired incident and minor injuries were reported to Maxwell. There were reports of a civilian vehicle also running over the spike strips.
