Sioux City Police Officer jumps into Icy Missouri River in hopes of checking van for occupants

Sioux City Police, Fire, and EMS responded to 1200 Larsen Park at the boat ramp at 2:28 pm for reports of a van that drove into the water. The occupant, a younger adult male got out of the van and was walking away from the scene when police arrived.

The driver was detained and taken to the hospital for observation. Sioux City Police Officer Josh Fleckenstein then stripped down and jumped into the water hoping to get to the van and check for other occupants. The water was too cold and he had to get back out. The Sioux City Fire Department was able to get to the boat and check for other occupants, none were found.

The van was pulled from the river by Meier Towing and it was confirmed no other occupants were in the van.
